Taking Care of Your Team

You’re running your business, juggling all of the competing demands.
You carefully plan a morning to get some space and take care of some important items.
That very morning, an impatient client wants an update on when their job is scheduled right away.
The fuel tanks are the shop are empty.
An employee forgets the tool they needed and are now an hour from the shop.
Thing after thing, clamoring for your attention, your response.
That list of important things that you have been needing to do fades off like a vague fog.
Is this resonating with you?
As a business owner, there is this seesaw between the urgent and important.
They both need answered, or the business comes grinding to a halt.
The urgent can almost begin to feel normal.
It can almost be the thing that makes you feel needed.
It can almost…. become an addiction to the urgent…
And when that begins to feel normal… we never break out of the cycle.
That same ball and chain around our ankle …is still there next year.
So… your capacity for growth, change, or improvement, is directly linked to your ability to tame the chaos that produces the urgency.
Meaning, as the leader, analyze what caused the urgent situation in the first place?
And then come up with the process to avoid the urgent situation again.
Client clamoring for an update on the schedule? How about a process in your sales process that communicates exactly what the client should expect.
Fuel tanks at the shop are empty? How about a process where someone is responsible to check the levels and order as needed.
Employee forgetting the tool? Did the info get communicated to them? How about a process with a clear checklist for each day. If they still forget even after you’ve provided the info, then you have a people problem. But until you’ve eliminated any communication breakdowns, you have a process problem.
As long as these urgent things own your day, you won’t have the time to focus on the important things.
Such as reviewing your budget, your hourly rates, your job costing reports, having that conversation with your employee, vendors, etc.
On and on it goes.
And those important things are really the things that produce growth and leverage.
It gives you the power to own the day, instead of the day owning you.
So… pause and reflect…
What is the next urgent thing that you need to tame down into a process?
And free up some time and brain energy to focus on the important things that really matter.
One of the things that is so helpful in pulling back curtain on where we’re addicted to the urgent is to get around other people that are or have been in the same situation.
Get in a room with others who are in the grind just like you.
That’s what we do our annual Contractor Summit event, to inspire and invigorate contractors from all across North America.
