How do you get your crews to perform like all stars - SynkedUP Blog

Your crew lead is calling you.

Again.

With another basic question.

You sigh… how do you get your crew to perform like all stars?

I mean, c’mon, they should know better by now, right?

Why can’t they learn?

It is their fault after all, isn’t it?

Um…

When is the last time you looked in the mirror?

Getting the same question repeatedly?

Check, have you provided them with the information they need to do their job?

Or is the reason they keep asking because you haven’t provided the info they needed ahead of time?

And so they learn to just ask you.

You’ve trained them to.

Now, the opposite could also be true.

Maybe you have provided the info or the process for them to follow.

So the real question you need to answer is: Do you have a people problem or a process problem?

If you’ve provided the process, provided the info, asked them if it was clear, and they still can’t follow the process… then perhaps you have a people problem.

But if you haven’t provided the process, the info, and made sure they understood, then you definitely have a process problem.

And that’s your fault – not theirs.

So, clean your own house first before you ask them to clean theirs.

Provide the info & process, ensure they understand, and they know what “good” looks like.

Now it’s on them to either perform, or communicate when something isn’t clear so you can overcome it.

When I was working on the crew at Tussey, we focused really hard on this process in regards to our job folder.

Meaning the info provided to the crew lead when kicking off the job.

We used the SynkedUP app to “be the process” for this.

As the crew lead, I could see each work area, the estimated materials and labor, photos, notes, the proposal, even line items on the proposal that had been rejected by the customer.

This alone dramatically decreased the amount of phone tag I had to play with the salesperson or owner.

I had the info I needed to move forward and execute.

Now, when you go do this for yourself and your crew, remember, old habits die hard.

You need to discipline yourself to adhere to the process you built. Plain English: provide the info to the crew every time.

If you aren’t reliable in putting the info there, the crew will stop checking there and just call you.

But vice versa, if the crew is calling you and you did put the info there, ask, “Did you check in the place you are supposed to for this info?”

If they didn’t tell them to call again if they still have questions after they’ve checked.

It’s a two way street.

You set the standard.

You can’t expect them to follow the process if you don’t…
