I know you know the power habits can have in growing your business.
Or anything for that matter.
One of my favorite quotes of all time is the one from James O’Cleary’s book Atomic Habits:
“You don’t rise to the level of your goals, rather, you fall to the level of your processes.”
I mean, even though I know this, I was still surprised yesterday when it actually was proven true for me.
Last year, I did a little sprint triathlon.
I had trained about 6 weeks for it, and I felt like I gave it all I had on race day.
This year I did it again.
Except this year, I had been running 3 times a week since January 1.
And this year, I admit, I didn’t give as much thought to prepping for the race.
I knew it was coming up, but my schedule at work was more demanding than ever, and I just didn’t have the extra brain share to give to it.
I just ran the 3 times a week and left it at that.
Race day came, and I focused more on having fun then pushing myself to the max.
I’d say I gave about 85-90% max effort.
And… this is where I was surprised.
I cut 14 minutes and 27 seconds off of last years’ time.
What!???
I couldn’t believe it.
I legit was not expecting that.
I was kind of taken aback, what a reminder!

So…
Where do I need to apply that reminder in the rest of life and business?
What are those little but regular habits I need to build and adhere to?
- Proposal follow ups?
- Response time to leads?
- Tracking time and job costing every job?
- Job kick off doc for the crew lead on every job?
- Asking for reviews?
You know, the ones so small and insignificant that you almost forget they’re a thing.
They’re so small that each time you execute on them, it feels like no needle is moving.
But you look up after a year, and you’re blown away at the change.
The tricky thing about habits are that they can build momentum to the positive or the negative.
Choose wisely.
